A Safer and Calmer Space for Children Undergoing Surgery

Multi-Purpose Room1Children coming into the Day Surgery Unit at the Royal Hospital for Children now have access to a newly upgraded multipurpose space, designed to help them feel calmer and more comfortable before and after their procedures. Glasgow Children's Hospital Charity is proud to have funded this vital enhancement, ensuring that young patients receive the best possible care.

To support children with autism, sensory processing difficulties, or high levels of anxiety, the space features interactive sensory equipment. Young patients can personalise their surroundings by selecting their favourite colours or switching to more muted tones when they need a more soothing atmosphere. This tailored approach helps children feel more in control, making their hospital experience as calm and positive as possible.

The newly enhanced room, which was previously used for desks and storage, has been thoughtfully designed to support children both before and after surgery. There is ample space for a bed to be wheeled in, while a discreet wall panel conceals access to oxygen and suction for patients who require it. For children who struggle with sedation before their operation, the room offers a more comforting approach, allowing them to play on the mats on the floor while they receive medication.

"Every parent and patient who has used this room can't say enough about how much of a difference it has made. The equipment helps create a safe, calming space where children can prepare for surgery or recover afterward without added stress."

One of the standout features is a projector on the floor, which has been particularly beneficial for children with mobility issues, as well as a surround sound system that allows patients to listen to relaxing sounds or their own favourite music.

For families, the impact has been profound. One mum described how her son, who normally finds hospital visits extremely distressing, was able to stay in the room all day without the usual struggles.

"It’s the first time he’s been in hospital without injuring me. When he gets upset, he lashes out. But this space helped him stay calm in a way we’ve never experienced before."

The safety aspect of the new space has also been a game-changer. Previously, equipment in bed bays could pose risks, with children pulling on medical tubes or getting overwhelmed by their surroundings. Now, with a simplified and engaging set up, staff can create a safer environment for everyone.

Since opening, the room has been in constant use, proving just how vital this enhancement has been for young patients and their families. Whether helping a child feel at ease before surgery or providing a peaceful space for recovery, this muti-purpose room is making a real difference every day. Thanks to the generosity of Glasgow Children's Hospital Charity supporters, children now have a space where they feel safer, calmer, and more in control during what can be a daunting experience.
