Anton’s Legacy: Two Decades of Making a Difference

20 December 2024 Anton2

In 2004, Anna and Bobby White experienced the heartbreak of losing their 15-year-old son, Anton, to a heart condition. During this incredibly difficult time, the care they received in the hospital left a lasting impression on the Whites, inspiring them to support other families facing similar challenges and to honour Anton’s memory through fundraising. Anton’s siblings, Andrea and Bobby Jr., along with their family and friends, have all been involved in fundraising, making it a true team effort.

Their journey began just days after Anton’s passing when the family auctioned tickets for a football game they could no longer attend. This was followed by “Anton’s Dance” in December 2004, the first of 21 annual dances held in his memory. Earlier this year, the family hosted the 21st and final dance, marking over two decades of incredible fundraising.

"Anton’s Dance started as a way to bring people together in his memory and raise funds for an important cause. We’re so proud of everything it’s achieved and grateful for the support of everyone who’s been part of this journey.”

In addition, the Whites organise a golf day every August, and family members, including Anton’s dad, Bobby, have taken on challenges, including running marathons in London and Edinburgh. To date, they have raised nearly £74,000 for Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity. These funds have supported countless children and families during some of the hardest moments of their lives.

Anna believes Anton, who loved Celtic Football Club and had a great sense of humour, would be proud of their efforts. Initially, the funds raised supported the purchase of vital cardiac equipment that the family became aware of during Anton’s time in hospital. Since then, their contributions have helped the charity support a wide range of services, even as the children’s hospital transitioned from Yorkhill to the Royal Hospital for Children. Anna, Bobby and Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity are also grateful for the support of the Celtic FC Foundation, whose contributions have boosted the family’s fundraising totals over the years. Reflecting on their fundraising journey, Anna shared,

“It’s brought so many positives, like creating lifelong friendships with other families, while keeping Anton’s memory alive and knowing we’re making a difference.”

Beyond fundraising, Anna has also begun supporting other bereaved families through Child Bereavement UK and Bobby recently shared their family’s journey as a speaker at the annual remembrance service organised by Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity, Child Bereavement UK, and NHS support services.

“I’m further on in my journey now. If I can give hope to someone by sharing my experiences, then I’m glad to be able to do that.”

Although “Anton’s Dance” has come to an end, the White family’s fundraising efforts are far from over. Their annual golf day remains a staple event, and Anna’s cousin Harry is creating a book, featuring a collection of Celtic FC vinyl records, with proceeds going to the charity. Anna also hopes to begin volunteering at the hospital soon, continuing her commitment to giving back.

"The White family’s contributions over the past two decades have been absolutely incredible. Their efforts have not only raised vital funds but have also created a lasting legacy in Anton’s memory, offering hope and support to so many families. On behalf of everyone at Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity, I want to extend our heartfelt thanks to Anna, Bobby, and their family for all their fundraising and continued support."
