Yassin's Story: Whatever It Takes
The Youngs adopted a family motto, “Whatever It Takes”, when Yassin was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia at 18 months old. Now 5 years old, we are honoured to share Yassin's story and the very special moment when he proudly rings the 'End of Treatment Bell.
In 2014, Yassin Young came to Scotland from Cairo with his Dad Tom, Mum Yasmin and big sister Dana to visit family. It was on this trip that Yassin suddenly became unwell. Yassin’s Dad told us:
“We were absolutely devastated when the doctor told us that he had leukaemia. Yassin was admitted to the Schiehallion Ward that same day. As we knew nothing about ALL, we feared for the worst as any parents would.
As Yassin’s treatment would last at least 3 years, we had to restructure our whole family life. We moved our family immediately from Cairo back to Scotland to be with Yassin, which involved enrolling his big sister in school in Glasgow.
This was an extremely stressful time for the whole family, particularly for his mum who immediately moved into the ward with Yassin.
As a family we all agreed that Yassin came first and we adopted a family motto “Whatever it takes”.
Through all his treatments, Yassin always managed to make us and anyone else in his company smile. He has been stronger than the rest of us, and has endured far more discomfort than any 5-year-old should without any complaint.
The Schiehallion Ward is an extraordinary place full of dedicated people. All staff, Doctors, nurses and support personnel were exceptional - always willing to listen and help in any way they could, even when circumstances and anxieties made it difficult for patients, parents and staff. We can’t thank them all enough.
We are thrilled that Yassin has now completed the treatment stage of his journey and has “rang the bell” which he has been looking forward to do for quite some time.
He is still our Yassin. Smiling, laughing and bringing sunshine to all that get to know him."
