Mum's Legacy Helps Kids with Cancer

We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone involved with  Marion's Still Smiling  for their wonderful donation of £50,000 towards our  Schiehallion Appeal.

This donation is generously given in memory of Marion Callaghan. Marion brought life and laughter to those around her, and was determined to support other families going through a cancer battle.

Marion’s family said she would have been “proud and delighted” to help the appeal, which aims to raise half-a-million pounds this year in partnership with the Daily Record.

In the summer of 2013, Marion, from Saltcoats, Ayrshire, was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer.

Her loved ones formed the foundation Marion's Still Smiling in her memory to ensure other terminal cancer patients were able to enjoy the special times she had.

Marion’s daughter Kirstin said: “Mum was determined to get on with living and making the most of the time she had left.

“She loved life and was always smiling. Even after a catastrophic diagnosis, she did everything she could to stay upbeat and optimistic.

“She endured rounds of gruelling treatment in a bid to win more time but in between chemotherapy and radiotherapy, she went out of her way to spend time with her loved ones.

“She took several breaks away with them, making memories and savouring every second. They were precious times.”

The foundation’s donation to the Schiehallion Appeal will help to give children with cancer the best possible chance in their fight, by bringing more of the latest treatments to Scotland.

Kirstin said: “Mum would be proud and delighted that her legacy is helping children with cancer.

“She was known for her compassion and generosity of spirit and even after her terminal diagnosis, she reached out to other cancer victims, offering them comfort and hope and raising smiles in their darkest days.

“She had a particular rapport with kids, so she really would be thrilled that donations from Marion’s Still Smiling will be used to give youngsters a chance of being cured.

“Everyone at Marion’s Still Smiling feels honoured to be part of this wonderful appeal and we offer our love, support and good luck wishes to all those involved.”

Marion's Still Smiling raise funds from a series of fundraising events in Ayrshire including It's A Knock Out, their annual Charity Ball and corporate and community donations. All donations raised help to support those with a cancer diagnosis, primarily funding short breaks in partnership with NHS Ayrshire and Arran.
